I HESITATED AT the front door of the trailer with its star and famous name on the door. I didn’t want to arrive tardy, but neither did I wish to bustle in, nervous. This was my first assignment for Vanity Fur, and much was riding on me getting my notoriously mercurial subject to open up and speak freely. Annie Fleabowitz had completed a photo shoot on set the week prior, and Greytom Carter, editor and publisher emeritus of Condor Nest Publishing, had proclaimed them superb.

Unspoken but obvious was the expectation my interview must be as well.

To increase my anxiety, there were no recorders allowed. This was old-school, and I would have to take notes by hand—and from those notes somehow write an article that captured the essence of a legend.

This would either make my career or return me to the hinterlands of North Carolina, tail dropped in shame. Kitty Hawk was a great place to be from, as they say, but I wanted the bright lights of Mew York City, and this interview could be my ticket.

A quick smooth of my whiskers, a deep breath, and I knocked on the trailer door.
